The chapter opens a parable about a landowner hiring workers throughout the day, promising them all the standard wage for a full day’s work. When the first hired workers grumble about receiving the same pay as those who worked for just an hour, the landowner explains that his generosity, not a strict adherence to hours worked, is the guiding principle. This parable introduces a central theme of the chapter: God’s grace as undeserved favor.
The chapter continues with Jesus traveling towards Jerusalem. For the third time, He predicts His coming suffering, betrayal, and crucifixion, followed by His resurrection. This foreshadowing prepares the disciples for the difficult events to come.
Brothers James and John, two of Jesus’ disciples, approach Him with their mother’s request. They desire prominent positions of power in Jesus’ coming Kingdom of Heaven.
