Matthew Chapter 19 Summary

Matthew chapter 19

Summary of Matthew 19

The chapter opens with Jesus traveling to Judea, followed by large crowds seeking healing. There, Pharisees attempt to test Jesus with a question about divorce. He challenges the Pharisees’ casual view of divorce, emphasizing God’s intention for marriage as a lifelong union.

Jesus then interacts with a rich young man who desires eternal life. Jesus affirms the importance of keeping the commandments but challenges the man to further sacrifice his wealth to follow him, which he refuses to do.

The rich young man asks, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” Jesus answered, “Keep the commandments”. The man replies, “I have kept all of them. What do I lack?”

Jesus answers, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

The chapter concludes with Jesus highlighting the difficulty for the wealthy to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Peter also questions Jesus saying, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?” Jesus answers, “Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.”
