Jesus then instructs followers on confronting a believer who has sinned, advocating a private discussion to see if the person repents. If not, a process of escalating confrontation involves bringing in another witness to establish a third-party testimony, and if that doesn’t work, alerting the church community to address the person.
Jesus also teaches on the importance of forgiveness, referencing a parable about an unforgiving servant. Peter asks, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”
