Matthew 12 opens with Jesus and His disciples traveling through grainfields on the Sabbath. The disciples pick heads of grain to eat, which sparks a confrontation with the Pharisees who believe this work violates the Sabbath restrictions.
Jesus defends His disciples through several arguments. First, he cites the example of David eating the consecrated bread, which was not lawful on the Sabbath. Jesus emphasizes that meeting basic needs is allowed. He then heals a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath, further challenging the Pharisees’ rigid interpretation of the law.
