Exodus Chapter 2 Summary

Exodus chapter 2 chronicles the birth of Moses, his survival from being killed, and his fleeing to Midian.

Summary of Exodus 2

The chapter opens with a scene of defiance in the face of oppression. A Levite couple, aware of Pharaoh’s decree to kill all newborn Hebrew boys, chooses to hide their baby, Moses. The clever construction of a hidden ark (a basket made of papyrus) and the baby’s placement near the Nile River demonstrate their resourcefulness.

The opening narrative highlights the courage and faith of the parents who defy the Pharaoh and take a significant risk to protect their child.

The chapter then takes a surprising turn with the intervention of Pharaoh’s daughter. Finding the baby by the Nile, she is moved to compassion and chooses to save him. This act of unexpected kindness introduces the idea of divine providence at work in Moses’ life.

Despite the dangers posed by Pharaoh’s decree, Moses is miraculously delivered. Furthermore, his placement within the Pharaoh’s household suggests a potential future role in challenging the very system that oppresses his people.

After Moses had grown up, he saw an Egyptian beating an Israelite (now of his own people). Angered by this brutality, Moses kills the Egyptian. When Pharaoh hears about it, he tries to kill Moses for his betrayal. Moses flees to Midian, where he starts a new life by marrying the daughter of a priest, Zipporah, who gave birth to a son named Gershom.

  • Divine providence: The seemingly chance encounter between the hidden baby and Pharaoh’s daughter, along with Moses’ placement within the palace, suggests a divinely orchestrated plan at work.
  • Oppression and suffering: The chapter does not shy away from portraying the harsh reality of the Israelites’ situation under Egyptian rule. The threat of infanticide establishes the depth of their oppression.
