Ecclesiastes Chapter 5 Summary

Ecclesiastes chapter 5 offers guidance on living a meaningful life despite the impermanence of everything “under the sun.” It focuses on reverence for God, mindful speech, and appreciating what one has.

Summary of Ecclesiastes 5

The chapter opens with advice on approaching God. It emphasizes thoughtful reflection before speaking to God and reverence over hasty sacrifices. It also warns against careless vows and encourages keeping promises made to God. It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it. In other words, do not let your mouth lead you into sin.

The focus then turns towards appreciating what one has. It acknowledges that excessive wealth can be a burden and emphasizes the joy found in enjoying the fruits of one’s labor. It states: “Whoever loves money never has enough.” And, “As goods increase, so do those who consume them.”

The final verses highlight the fleeting nature of possessions and the unexpected turns life can take. It provides a stark reminder that everyone comes into this world with nothing (naked from their mother’s womb) and departs from the world in the same way (with nothing). We take nothing from our toil after we die, so we should find satisfaction with the lot God has given us here on earth.
