Nehemiah Chapter 13 Summary

Nehemiah chapter 13 recounts the challenges Nehemiah faces upon returning to Jerusalem after twelve years serving the Persian king. He discovers that the people have strayed from their commitments to God’s law.

Summary of Nehemiah 13

Upon his return, Nehemiah finds the temple chambers defiled by the presence of Tobiah, an Ammonite official and enemy of the Jews. He promptly expels Tobiah and his belongings. He also addresses other issues plaguing the community, including the neglect of supporting the Levites financially, the desecration of the Sabbath through commerce, and intermarriage with foreign women.

Through decisive action and passionate pleas, Nehemiah enforces the laws and leads the people back to a more faithful way of living. He purified the priests and the Levites of everything foreign, assigned them duties, and made provision for contributions of wood at designated times and for the firstfruits.
