Book of 1 John Summary By Chapter
Chapter 1: The Word of Life and Walking in the Light
John begins by establishing his personal connection to Jesus Christ, the “Word of Life.” He emphasizes the tangible, physical nature of Jesus’ ministry that they witnessed firsthand. His reason for writing is to spread the joy of fellowship–communion with both God and with other believers.
John’s central message is that God is light, and in Him is no darkness. If Christians claim fellowship with God yet live in darkness (sin), they deceive themselves. However, continuous confession of sins brings forgiveness and cleansing through the blood of Christ.

Chapter 2: Children of God and the Antichrist

Chapter 4: Testing the Spirits, Born of God
John exhorts his readers to carefully test every spiritual claim, as false prophets abound in the world. The test for truth is that the spirits who acknowledge Jesus Christ, fully human and God, are from God. Those who deny Christ’s humanity are not from God.
John repeats with certainty that God is love and those who live in love live in God, and God in them. True love dispels fear because God’s perfect love gives the believer confidence.

Chapter 5: Confidence and Eternal Life
John stresses that those born of God overcome the world, and faith in Jesus is the victory. He reaffirms that Jesus Christ is truly the Son of God, and through this belief, one has eternal life. John then discusses the bold confidence believers have when praying in accordance with God’s will.
While all sin is serious, John distinguishes between sins that do not lead to death (likely sins of ignorance) and those that do (likely willful, defiant sin). He ends the letter underscoring that Jesus Christ is the true God and the source of eternal life and warns those who follow idols.
