Book of 2 John Chapter Summary

Chapter 1: A Call to Remain in Truth and Love

The second letter of John opens with a warm greeting, identifying himself as “the elder” and addressing “the chosen lady and her children.” While the specific identities remain unclear, the use of “chosen lady” likely symbolizes a specific church community or a prominent Christian woman. John expresses his love for them and their steadfast adherence to the truth – the truth about Jesus Christ and his teachings. He emphasizes the importance of abiding in both truth and love, for they are inseparable.

John warns against those who deceive by denying the truth about Jesus, specifically his full humanity and divinity. He calls such individuals “deceivers” and “antichrists” and urges the recipients to resist their influence. He reminds them of the importance of hospitality and commends those who offer support to faithful teachers who proclaim authentic Christian doctrine.

The letter concludes with John expressing his desire to visit them soon for further fellowship and exchange of truth. He sends greetings to other members of the community and reiterates his closing blessing of grace, mercy, and peace.
