Summary of Romans 7
In Romans 7, the Apostle Paul uses the analogy of marriage to explain the tension between wanting to do good and being pulled towards sin. He argues that just as a woman is freed from her deceased husband and can belong to another, believers in Christ are released from the Law’s demands through His death. However, the Law itself isn’t sinful; it reveals the depth of our sinfulness.
Even with a desire to follow God’s law, Paul describes an inner struggle where sin resides within us, leading to actions we don’t want to commit.
The chapter ends with a cry of desperation from Paul, acknowledging his inability to overcome sin on his own. He says that although he wants to do good, evil is right there with him. His inner being delights in God’s Law, but there is an internal struggle going on where he is a prisoner of the sin at work inside him.
Fortunately, a note of hope persists. Paul expresses thankfulness to God through Jesus Christ, hinting at the solution to this internal battle which will be explored in the following chapters.
