This chapter lays the foundation for Christian living by outlining the characteristics of those blessed by God and explaining the true meaning of discipleship.

Summary of Matthew 5

The chapter opens with the Beatitudes, pronouncing blessings on the poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and the persecuted (verses 3-10).

Jesus then calls His disciples “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world,” urging them to live righteously and influence others for good (verses 13-16).

Jesus clarifies that He has not come to abolish the Law of Moses but to fulfill it, raising the moral standards even higher (verses 17-20).

Jesus then explains the true meaning of the Laws, using lessons that teach a higher way of righteousness that goes beyond the letter of the Law to the spirit of God’s intentions for how we should live:

  • Anger: Jesus equates anger with murder, teaching that reconciliation should precede worship.
  • Adultery: He warns that even looking at someone lustfully is akin to committing adultery in the heart.
  • Divorce: Jesus speaks against divorce, except for marital unfaithfulness, emphasizing the sanctity of marriage.
  • Oaths: He instructs to not swear oaths at all but to simply let one’s ‘yes’ be ‘yes,’ and ‘no,’ ‘no.’
  • Retaliation: He challenges the law of retaliation by encouraging turning the other cheek and going the extra mile.
  • Love for Enemies: Jesus commands his followers to love their enemies and pray for persecutors, exemplifying God’s perfection.
