Matthew Chapter 3 Summary

Matthew chapter 3 introduces John the Baptist, a prophet calling for repentance in preparation for the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven. People flock to him to be baptized in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. Jesus is baptized by John.

Summary of Matthew 3

John the Baptist preaches a message of repentance in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming that the Kingdom of Heaven is near. He fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah by preparing the way for the Messiah.

Dressed in simple clothing and living an austere life, John attracts large crowds seeking baptism and spiritual renewal. When Jesus arrives, John recognizes Him as the one coming after Him and attempts to defer to Jesus’ greater importance.

Jesus replies, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented to baptizing Jesus.

As Jesus was coming up out of the water, heaven was opened, and the Spirit of God descended on Him like a dove. A voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
