The chapter then dives into the story of Jesus’s birth. Mary, betrothed to Joseph, is found pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Joseph, a righteous man, wrestles with how to handle the situation. An angel appears to him in a dream, explaining that Mary’s pregnancy is a miraculous work of God. Joseph is instructed to take Mary as his wife and raise the child, who will be named Jesus.
Matthew 1 concludes by explaining that Jesus’s birth fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah that a virgin would conceive and bear a son named Immanuel, meaning “God with us.”
