Summary of Mark 14
As the Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread draw near, the chief priests and teachers of the Law plot to eliminate Jesus. Meanwhile, in Bethany, a woman’s act of extravagant devotion in anointing Jesus with expensive perfume is met with criticism by some disciples. Jesus, however, defends her action, prophetically alluding to His approaching death and burial.
The scene shifts to the Last Supper, a Passover meal shared by Jesus and His disciples. During this gathering, Jesus establishes the Lord’s Supper, a symbolic act that commemorates the new covenant initiated by His sacrifice. Here, he also delivers a devastating blow – the shocking prediction that one disciple will betray Him and that all will abandon Him before sunrise.
The chapter then moves to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus seeks solace and prayer in the face of His impending suffering. Here, the human weakness of the disciples is on stark display as they succumb to sleep despite Jesus’ pleas for their watchfulness.
The chapter reaches its climax with the arrival of Judas, who betrays Jesus with a kiss, identifying Him for the arresting mob. In a final act of impulsive defense, one disciple draws a sword and severs the ear of the high priest’s servant, but this act is futile. Jesus is then apprehended, marking the beginning of His journey towards the cross.
