Jonah chapter 3 marks a turning point in the story. After being reluctant and disobedient, Jonah finally obeys God’s command and travels to Nineveh, the great Assyrian city, to deliver a message of impending destruction.
Summary of Jonah Chapter 3
In Jonah chapter 3, God gives Jonah a second chance. This time, Jonah follows God’s instructions and journeys to Nineveh. The city is vast, taking three days to traverse.
Jonah enters the city and proclaims a simple, but ominous, message: “Forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” (Jonah 3:4)
Surprisingly, the Ninevites respond with genuine repentance. The king himself decrees a city-wide fast and instructs everyone, from the greatest to the least, to wear sackcloth and ashes as a sign of mourning and humility. They all turn to God, pleading for forgiveness and mercy. Witnessing their sincere repentance, God relents from his anger and chooses not to destroy the city.
