Genesis Chapter 38 Summary

Genesis chapter 38 interrupts the narrative of Joseph to focus on Judah, one of Joseph’s brothers. It details Judah’s family troubles and a complex situation involving his daughter-in-law, Tamar.

Summary of Genesis Chapter 38

In Genesis 38, Judah separates from his brothers and marries a Canaanite woman. He has three sons, Er, Onan, and Shelah. Er marries Tamar, but God strikes him down for wickedness. Following tradition, Onan is obligated to marry Tamar to continue Er’s lineage, but he practices a method to avoid impregnating her. This act is considered wicked by God, and Onan is also struck down.

Judah, fearing for Shelah’s life, delays fulfilling his responsibility towards Tamar. Deceiving Judah, Tamar disguises herself as a prostitute and secures his pledge of a goat kid in exchange for sexual favors. When she becomes pregnant, Judah demands punishment for the assumed harlot. However, Tamar reveals Judah’s belongings left as payment, publicly exposing him as the father.
