Genesis 34 opens with Dinah, daughter of Leah and Jacob, being raped by Shechem, the prince of the city where Jacob’s family resides. While Jacob remains initially silent, his sons, Simeon and Levi, are enraged by their sister’s violation and devise a deceitful plan for revenge.
Simeon and Levi agree to a marriage proposal from Shechem on the condition that all the men of the city undergo circumcision, a painful procedure practiced by their religion.
