Summary of Genesis Chapter 16
Faced with continued childlessness despite God’s promise of numerous offspring, Sarai, Abram’s wife, proposes that he father a child with her Egyptian maidservant, Hagar. Abram agrees, and Hagar conceives. However, upon becoming pregnant, Hagar despises Sarai and is mistreated in return, leading her to flee into the wilderness.
An angel of the Lord finds Hagar and instructs her to return and submit to her mistress. The angel also reveals that Hagar will bear a son named Ishmael, who will become the father of a great nation. Hagar returns to Abram and Sarai, and Ishmael is born.
