Genesis chapter 14 tells the story of Abram’s intervention in a regional conflict and his encounter with a mysterious figure named Melchizedek.
Summary of Genesis Chapter 14
Genesis 14 opens with a description of a war between five Canaanite kings, including the king of Sodom where Abram’s nephew Lot resided. The Canaanite kings are defeated by four eastern kings, and Lot is taken captive along with other spoils of war.
Upon learning of this, Abram gathers a force of 318 men and pursues the victors, successfully defeating them at night and rescuing Lot and the other captives.
On his return journey, Abram encounters two figures. The first is the king of Sodom, who offers Abram the recovered spoils in exchange for keeping Lot and his people. Abram refuses, declaring he will not benefit from the king’s wealth. The second figure is Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High. Melchizedek offers Abram bread and wine, blesses him, and receives a tithe (one-tenth) of the recovered spoils from Abram.
Finally, the chapter concludes with Abram rejecting the king of Sodom’s offer once again and returning to his home.
