Exodus Chapter 1 Summary

Exodus chapter 1 sets the stage for the Israelites’ liberation from Egyptian slavery.

Summary of Exodus 1

Exodus 1 opens by introducing the twelve sons of Jacob, who settled in Egypt with their families, forming the twelve tribes of Israel. The chapter describes a period of prosperity for the Israelites, who “were fruitful and increased greatly, multiplied and very numerous” (Exodus 1:7). However, a new Pharaoh rises to power, one who “did not know Joseph” (Exodus 1:8).

The Pharaoh, fearing the Israelites’ growing population and potential alliance with Egypt’s enemies, takes drastic measures by putting slave masters over them and oppressing them with forced labor. He also makes a decree that every Israelite boy that is born must be thrown in the Nile River.

Exodus 1 Themes

  • Oppression: The Pharaoh institutes a policy of forced labor on the Israelites, turning them from valued guests into a subjugated people. This theme of oppression establishes the central conflict of the Book of Exodus: the Israelites’ struggle for freedom.
  • Fear and Control: The Pharaoh’s actions stem from fear of the Israelites’ growing numbers and potential for rebellion. He views them as a threat to his power and seeks to control their population through brutal means.
  • Faith and Defiance: In the face of the Pharaoh’s decree to kill all newborn Israelite boys, the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, defy his orders and choose to protect the children. This act of courage and defiance, rooted in their faith in God, becomes a beacon of hope amidst the oppression.
  • Prophecy and Foreshadowing: The harsh treatment of the Israelites foreshadows God’s intervention on their behalf. The oppression becomes a catalyst for God’s plan to liberate his chosen people and fulfill his promises to Abraham and his descendants. The suffering of the Israelites sets the stage for the dramatic events to come, where God’s power will be pitted against the might of Pharaoh.
