Amos chapter 7 details the prophet’s visions and encounters through which he conveys God’s warnings and judgments against the Northern Kingdom of Israel for their social injustices and religious idolatry.
Summary of Amos Chapter 7
The chapter opens with two symbolic visions received by Amos. In the first, a locust swarm threatens to devour the newly sprouted crops, symbolizing famine and devastation. In the second, a consuming fire engulfs the land, representing the potential destruction of Israel.
In both instances, Amos intercedes through prayer, and God relents, sparing Israel from immediate punishment. However, the reprieve is conditional, as God warns Amos that their continued disobedience will lead to inevitable consequences.
The chapter then shifts to a confrontation with Amaziah, a priest at the idolatrous shrine in Bethel. Amaziah accuses Amos of treason and attempts to silence the prophet by urging him to return to his homeland and prophesy there. Amos refutes these accusations, emphasizing his divine calling and delivering a scathing prophecy against Amaziah and his family, foretelling their demise and the destruction of the Northern Kingdom.
