Mark Chapter 5 Summary

Mark chapter 5 tells the stories of Jesus restoring a demon-possessed man, raising a dead girl, and healing a sick woman.

Summary of Mark 5

The chapter opens with Jesus crossing the Sea of Galilee and encountering a demon-possessed man in the Gerasenes. The man is tormented by the demons and isolated from society.

Jesus casts out the demons from the man, who then begs Jesus not to send them away. The demons are allowed to possess a herd of swine, which then rushes into the sea and drowns.

Meanwhile, Jairus, a synagogue leader, approaches Jesus, pleading for Him to heal his daughter who is at the point of death. On their way, a woman who has been bleeding for twelve years touches Jesus’ garment and is healed. By the time Jesus arrives at Jairus’ house, the girl has died, but Jesus brings her back to life. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around. Jesus gave strict orders for the family not to tell anyone about this miracle.

Mark 5 Themes

  • Authority over demons: Jesus demonstrates His complete dominance over evil spirits. By expelling a legion of demons (which implies a vast number), Jesus establishes His power to heal those tormented by demonic forces.
  • Impurity and loss: The destruction of the herd of swine may hold symbolic meaning. Swine were considered unclean animals by Jews, and their demise could represent the expulsion of the demons’ impurity. The Gerasenes, however, experience a significant economic loss with the destruction of the herd. This raises questions about the cost of Jesus’ intervention and the challenges posed by His presence.
  • Faith and healing: Both the demon-possessed man and the hemorrhaging woman are healed through their faith in Jesus. The man’s plea for Jesus not to send the demons away suggests his belief in Jesus’ authority, while the woman’s act of touching Jesus’ garment demonstrates her faith in His healing power. Jesus acknowledges this faith in both instances.
  • Power over life and death: Jesus not only heals the sick, but also raises the dead. Jairus’ daughter is demonstrably dead by the time Jesus reaches her, yet Jesus speaks with authority, declaring, “Talitha koum,” which translates to “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” This miraculous act further emphasizes Jesus’ divine power.
