Genesis chapter 41 details a turning point in Joseph’s life. After two years of imprisonment, Pharaoh has troubling dreams that none of his advisors can interpret. The chief cupbearer remembers Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams and suggests Pharaoh call upon him.
Summary of Genesis Chapter 41
In Genesis 41, Pharaoh recounts his dreams of seven fat cows being devoured by seven skinny cows, followed by seven full heads of grain withering after seven shriveled ones. Joseph interprets the dreams as a prediction of seven years of abundant harvests followed by seven years of devastating famine.
Jacob advises Pharaoh to appoint a wise leader to oversee the collection and storage of grain during the plentiful years to prepare for the coming famine. Impressed by Joseph’s interpretation and plan, Pharaoh elevates Joseph to a position of great authority, second only to himself. Joseph is then given an Egyptian wife and begins to implement his plan to ensure Egypt’s survival during the coming famine.
